Tata Power Renewable Energy Secures First Standalone BESS Deal with NHPC for Kerala

Tata Power Renewable Energy

Pune: Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power and one of India’s foremost clean energy providers, has signed its first-ever Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with NHPC Limited for a strategic project in Kerala.

The battery energy storage system (BESS), with a capacity of 30 MW / 120 MWh, will be deployed at a 220 kV substation in Kerala to serve the Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEB).

The project was secured under the NHPC’s BESS Tranche-I tender through tariff-based competitive bidding, and is designed to bolster grid stability, address peak power demand, and facilitate the seamless integration of renewable energy into Kerala’s electricity grid.

A Major Step Toward India’s Clean Energy Goals

The initiative forms part of NHPC’s larger plan to install 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone BESS capacity in Kerala, under the guidance of the Ministry of Power and supported by Viability Gap Funding (VGF).

The agreement spans 12 years, and the system is expected to be commissioned within 15 months, reinforcing battery storage as a key pillar in India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

This strategic win also aligns with the Government of India’s ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, and showcases TPREL’s capability in delivering dispatchable and scalable clean energy solutions.

Tata Power Renewable Energy: Strengthening the Energy Storage Portfolio

Tata Power Renewable Energy is already operating a 100 MW solar + 120 MWh BESS project in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, developed under an EPC contract from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

However, the new Kerala project marks TPREL’s first standalone BESS project, reflecting its growing leadership in energy storage innovation.

With this addition, Tata Power Renewable Energy’s total portfolio now stands at approximately 10.9 GW, comprising 5.6 GW of operational projects (including 4.6 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind) and 5.3 GW under various stages of development.
